Ralph McQuarrie ist tot

I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man. Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.

Ich weiß nicht, wie oft ich die „Art of Star Wars“-Bücher durchgeblättert habe, in denen so unzählige Konzeptstudien zu den ersten drei Star Wars-Filmen abgedruckt sind und die davon erzählen, wie diese ganze Saga zuerst in den Köpfen entstanden und dann von McQuarrie visualiert wurde, bevor wir dem Spektakel im Kino beiwohnen konnten.

McQuarrie ist einer von diesen Menschen, die immer im Schatten anderer standen – und vielleicht auch stehen wollten – und dennoch vermutlich soviel mehr für eine Sache getan haben, als die, die damit letztlich für die Öffentlichkeit bejubelt wurden.
