Die 5 Sekunden Regel
07.02.2022
Hey Markus,
How much time do you spend refreshing your inbox every day instead of doing your work?
Procrastination happens to the best of us. But if you want to avoid it in the future, I’ve got a rule that might help.
The 5 Second Rule is a concept by bestselling author Mel Robbins. It’s a really simple yet effective way to break out of the procrastination cycle.
Here’s how it works: if you have an urge to take action on a goal — whether it’s getting out of bed, doing a workout or taking out the trash — you have around a 5-second window to physically move.
If you don’t act within that window, your brain has time to kill that urge and that’s when procrastination takes over.
So, the secret to make sure you actually act on that urge? Count down backward from 5 to 1. As soon as you hit 1, move.
You’d be surprised at how well it works to trick your brain into taking action. You can use this strategy to do everything from facing discomfort like jumping into a cold shower, breaking habits or building new ones.
You might want to give it a try right now. What do you need to work on at this moment?
You’ve got 5 seconds...
